Lived Experiences

I spoke with a friend who shared their experience of being subjected to racial slurs in public. They expressed how such incidents, though often dismissed as “isolated,” contribute to a sense of alienation and insecurity. This made me realize how deeply ingrained prejudices can affect mental health and self-esteem.

Reflecting on 2024 as a year that brought the birth of NLEMA as the community spoke and we listened! Our board grew from a mere three (3) trustees to seven (7) in a short period of time, this proves that our community are hungry for change and involvement in the plight to better represent the individuals that form the demographics of a diverse community. Our societies are changing for the positive and we are always welcoming newcomers looking to settle in North Lanarkshire.

Conversations were insightful and friendships were made as we headed into 2025 with a positive initiative to continue our work within the community for the betterment of BAME settlers in North Lanarkshire.

Opportunities to discuss ethnic minorities’ contributions to the food industry as part of an informal research data collection process will be actively pursued in aid of improving services offered by NLEMA. Members have the choice whether to participate or not, there is no obligation.

With feedback from our members and an overall consensus of the committee, we have decided to provide an 8-week programme that children and adults of all ages, religions and backgrounds can attend. The combining cultures project will offer 3 individual forms of education – distributed in a fun and enjoyable way.
